Riverside Town League

Man of the Match: Andy Ward
As the season draws to a close the mighty Riverside were pitched against a Rockvilla side fighting for promotion. It seemed a certain win to the Rockvilla but Riverside were able to draw on the skill and fitness of a team who should have finished higher up the table this year (and we didn't have Fitchy which always helps!).
The game kicked off with both sides struggling to find their feet on a boggy muddy pitch. After a spell of poor passing by both teams, Riverside created the first real opportunity of the match. Following a Kev corner the ever young Whawell twisted and turned and got to the byline, a cross shot found the unmarked R. Jones who, forgetting which end he was at, skilfully guided the ball over the bar from 2 yards!
Riverside played well with all of the team giving 100% we were rewarded with another corner which was swung in by Kevin and the finished from close range by Whawell.
The lead however was not too last. Rockvilla attacked through the heart of the pitch and ended up poaching a goal just before half time.
The second half started well for Riverside, we created a number of chances which we could not put away. The goal was bound to come and midway through the second half Wardy broke clear of the defence, he had been threatening this all game, and then unselfishly he squared the ball past the advancing keeper to Sean who knocked the ball home from eight yards.
The shape of the team was changed as Barry went off and Hayes tired, this was to contribute to the equaliser. The usual comedy goal was to be conceded where the ball bobbled around the box for seemed an age, then was tucked away by the Rockvilla vertically challenged striker.
A game which deserved a win ended up as a draw, a creditable draw but it could have been so much more.
Bring on Clipper Rangers!

A bad, bad day. First run-out in the new kit too...
weak oppostion but only 10 men (including a 15 year old debutant). Dave Barry lasted 10 mins before succumbing to a ankle injury and swapping the goalkeeper jersey with Paul Coburn for the rest of the game. Despite the depleted squad on the day, the usual cry of "we had the chances to win" went up - with at least 4 "one on ones" with their keeper which didn't produce a goal. At 2-0, early in the second half, hope was rekindled with a throw on the left, a chest down, spin past the defender and thunderous shot from 25 yards - the first Coburn goal of the season (and a GOTS contender). Whilst pushing for the equaliser, however, we were caught on the break twice to put the result beyond our reach. A bad one to lose.

Report from Paul Singleton from Gibraltar
Riverside Town are up and running with 3 wins out of 3. But it is this month that could define our season. Apart from the cup game, which you are not expected to win, RTFC (currently 3rd) plays the current 1st, 2nd and 4th place teams all this month. So what will happen??? 3 wins against those 3 teams would not only see RTFC top, but also clear by quite a way. All of these 3 teams are unbeaten so far this season, but so are RTFC, and so were Wirral Health until they played us last weekend. So what is the prospect of this weekends game against Big House?? A team that, by looking at the stats do not let many goals in at all against a free flowing, free scoring Riverside. A top defence against a top attack could make for a very interesting game indeed. But I suspect it will be the weaker side of both teams which will determine the result. Riverside's leaky defence against a team that do not score very many goals at all.
Players to watch:
RTFC: Martin Hayes - On fire at the moment, and sure to prove a handful for Big House.
BHFC: Big Lanky 6ft+ striker - His hold up play and flick ons proved a constant menace in previous games.
The battle between the BHFC big striker and our own giant Robbie Jones could be the key element to the game.
Match Prediction: Away Win for RTFC - Still too powerful going forward for most teams, despite losing their top goalscorer from last season.
Good Luck Lads!!!!
Paul

30th September 2001
Wirral Health 3 - 4 Riverside Town
League
Martin Hayes 2
A great win, despite the two really poor goals we gave away  plus the penalty, sees Riverside Town continue their unbeaten start to the League season. Goal of the game surely goes to Martin Hayes - a quickly taken throw in saw Martin turn and rifle in an unstoppable shot high at the keepers near post.

23rd September 2001
Riverside Town 2 - 5 Halfway House
Friendly
Sean 2
The referee didn't turn up so we played a friendly against Halfway House. We lost 2-5 in what has to be our most disappointing performance to date. The only bit worth mentioning was where Paul Singleton, returning from Gibraltar for his first game of the season, was rampaging down the right wing unmarked until being gunned down by a sniper hidden in the bushes (he fell over really but it looked good!)

16th September 2001
Riverside Town 2 - 1 Park Rangers
League
Ben Whawell
A gritty performance saw Riverside Town continue their unbeaten league form with a 2-1 victory over Park Rangers. We went in at half time 1-0 up after a penalty was converted at the second attempt. Early on in the second half our goalkeeper Bunhead was sent off for bringing their striker down outside the area. Rangers scored an  equaliser soon after but we dug in and a great free kick from Hayes was calmly knocked in near the goal line to make it 2-1 with 20 minutes to go. Performances like this may well see Riverside Town near the top of the league at the end of the season...

9th September 2001
Hotel Victoria 3 - 1 Riverside Town Cup
Martin Hayes
A poor turnout of 9 men (then 10) resulted in a 1-3 loss to Hotel Victoria in the Wirral F.A. Sunday Amateur Cup.
A great solo goal from Martin Hayes made it 1-1 early on in the second half but we were too tired (and unfit!) to continue the fight.

2nd September 2001
Riverside Town 7 - 3 Clipper Rangers League
Robbie Jones 2, Martin Hayes 2, Dave Barry, Dave Hale, Ben Whawell
A well deserved 7-3 win secures top place in the league for Riverside Town on the first day of the new season.
Goals from Robbie Jones(2), Martin Hayes(2), Dave Barry, Dave Hale and Ben Whawell.

22nd August 2001
Andy Ward, Sean
A 3-2 win against the Sefton Park lads. Surely a goal of the season contender already with Andy Ward's 55 yard free kick goal?

19th August 2001
Andy Ward, Sean, Matt Guy
A 3-4 loss to Ben's friends. Goals from Andy Ward, Sean and Matt Guy.
